Definition of Lock ‘Grade’ Levels and Lock Security Quality!

1. Grade 1: Most commercial/business locks should be rated at this level. This is the highest grade that Underwriters Laboratory (UL) gives a lock. This grade means that this model lock has withstood 1,000,000 (one million) uses and is still functioning.

2. Grade 2: Commercial/business locks which are used frequently (per day) but are not high use locks should be rated at this level. This is a moderate commercial or high residential use grade by UL. This grade means that this model lock has withstood 500,000 (one half million) uses and is still functioning.

3. Grade 3: Residential locks should be rated at this level or higher. This grade means that this model lock has withstood 35,000 uses and is still functioning.

4. Upgraded: AVOID this quality lock at all costs. This lock has not been tested by UL.

5. High Security: Offer a greater degree of resistance to any or all of the following: picking, impressioning, key duplication, drilling or other forms of forcible entry. Some high security locks offer registered keys (example: Medeco’s patented keyways) so that only the owner can have copies made. True high security locks have been tested and certified by Underwriters Lab and are imprinted with the UL logo.

6. Lifetime Finish: A finish that retains its original luster. This helps inhance the beauty of your home. The finish will only last if the surface of the hardware is undamaged or unscratched.

FAQ:

1. Q: Why do I care if some one copies my key?
A: Who are they going to giving the key to? Do you want some one to have a key to your home or business without your permission?

2. Q: How can I stop some one from making a copy of my key?
A: The best way is to change your locks to High Security Medeco locks on your home and business. The keys for Medeco locks can be registered in your name; so that only you can have copies of the keys made.

3. Q: How can I give a key to a cleaning service, pet setter, etc. and give them access my home or business only when I want?
A: By limiting their access to one lock on one door and having a second lock on that door that only you have a key for. When they no longer have your permission to access you home or business, rekey that one lock. You will save money and lock them out in less time!

4. Q: Doesn’t an alarm give me the security that I need?
A: NO! Alarms are part of your security. A good lock that is properly installed should keep some one out. Alarm only tells you that some one has entered your home or business. It doesn’t stop them!

5. Q: I have a newly constructed home; the builder told me that once I use my key, his key (the builder’s key) will no longer work. Is this true and am I safe?
A: Yes, but no! The builder’s key may no longer work but there are still 36 to 72 different keys that can open you door!

6. Q: I just moved into a previously owned home, should I rekey the locks?
A: Yes, absolutely! Who did the previous owner give keys to? Did the previous owner give you ALL of the keys? Be SAFE, rekey!

7. Q: Is there a difference between manufactures of locks?
A: YES! Some lock manufacturers label their lock “maximum” security. I’ve picked these locks in as little as 1 second. Is this security? There are some locks that I won’t even spend 1 second trying to pick, such as Medeco. They’re that good.

8. Q: Is there a difference between types of locks?
A: You get the vast majority of your security from a “deadbolt.” I choke every time some one tells me that they don’t use their deadbolt because it’s an inconvenience to have to use a key to lock their door. Most locking door knobs can be opened using the old “credit card” trick.

9. Q: Why do I need deadbolts on all of my exteriors doors?
A: See the answer to the question above!

10. Q: My house has new locks, aren’t I secure?
A: The only answer I can give this question without seeing your locks is NO! You may have good locks, but the manufacture may have done a poor job in keying the lock. See the answer to the question about “difference between manufactures.”

11. Q: My locks look old and weathered. What can I do to keep them bright and shinny?
A: Lock manufacturers have come a long way with finishes that retain their bright shinny finish. You will need to replace your locks with new ones that have a “Lifetime Finish.”
